The 1983 Code of Canon Law stipulates that the parish priest is to see that the child is properly instructed to receive the sacrament or sacraments. To fulfil this canonical obligation, the parish priest is to request that the candidate receiving catechesis related to sacramental preparation and follow-up meetings, is registered with the parish and may, should it be deemed necessary, ask or invite the individual or parents to attend to activities related to sacramental preparation and follow-up formation before granting permission for a sacrament to be administered.
