Goodness

Fruit of the Holy Spirit

Goodness

Goodness is living like Jesus and showing love, humility and forgiveness.

How can parents encourage this fruit in their children?

  • How often do parents tell their children to be good, meaning that they want them to behave? Yet this fruit, similarly to the other fruits, is not about us but about how we are going to share goodness with others. God is good. God loves us, provides for us, protects and forgives us.
  • Read the Parable of the Good Samaritan and discuss with the children why the Samaritan is good.
  • Encourage the children to share and help. They may use part of their pocket money to donate to an organisation like Missiotfal.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, help me to do what is right. Help me to be more caring and understanding. Amen.

Hero

Saint Martin of Tours

When Martin grew up, he became a soldier. He showed this fruit of goodness when one day he met a poor beggar who did not have enough clothes to keep himself warm and gave him half his cloak. That night he dreamt that Jesus was wearing that piece of cloak!

He went to live in a monastery and helped those in need. Even when he became bishop he lived a simple life, always helping whenever he could.

Living it!

  • If at school, there is someone who has no friends, make friends with him or her.
  • Do something good or help your brother or sister without expecting something in return.
