On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me… ten Lords a-leaping
This is surely a very strange gift! Lords are usually very well behaved, not jumping around. These ten Lords make us think of the ten commandments which God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai. 1) You shall have no other gods before me. 2) Do not take the name of God in vain. 3) Keep the Sabbath Day special. 4) Honour you father and mother. 5) Do not kill. 6) Keep your marriage promises. 7) Do not steal. 8) Do not bear false witness against your neighbour. 9) Do not covet your neighbour’s wife. 10) Do not covet your neighbour’s things.
In simple terms these commandments teach us how to live according to God’s will. That is, to put God first and to respect his name. Respect God’s Day of rest (Sunday). Respect our parents, do not kill people, respect marriage, do not steal, do not lie and do not be jealous of others.
